Megazone 23

Company: Manga Entertainment
Format: PAL VHS, English Dubbed
Runtime: 100 minutes
Catalogue Number: MANV 1083
Release Date: 5 June 1995

This is actually an English dub of both parts of the Megazone 23 Part III" OVA. The dub was directed in the UK by Michael Bakewell, who produced the English dub for the 1970's cult classic live action TV series "Monkey!". This release drops the "Part III" from the title, though it does acknowledge in small print on the back that it is actually "Megazone 23 Part III". The other two parts were never released in the UK, although "Robotech the movie" was released on VHS there in 1987. The tape contains a five minute prologue, with a narrator telling the audience the story of "Megazone 23", with seemingly randomly edited pieces of animation from this OVA. Created by Manga Entertainment, I can only assume that they thought it would be beneficial for the audience to know the back story of the series. However the retelling of the story changes two important parts; first it claims that the Bahamut was always on Earth and it controlled the Megazones that were out in space. Secondly it bizarrely claims that Shogo learnt about the truth of his world from an "old man".

Megazone 23 Part 1/Megazone 23 Part 1 with Collector's Box

Country of Origin: USA
Company: ADV Films
Format:
NTSC DVD, Region 1, Japanese Dialogue and English Dub with English Subtitles
Runtime: 81 minutes
Catalogue Number: DMZ/001 (Disc Only), DMZ/BX1 (Disc with Collector's Box)
Release Date: 1 June 2004
Availability: Out of Print

After the original Image Entertainment disc went out of print for many years, ADV Films eventually re-released the OVA in 2004. It contains a brand new English dub with a new cast, the Japanese language track and English subtitles. As a bonus there is a commentary track with Matt Greenfield, director of the English dub and two other ADV staff, David Williams and Janice Williams. In the commentary they discuss a few of the in-jokes and the history of the OVA and how they dubbed the title. This disc also contains a mini poster with some liner notes taken from the 2000 Japanese DVD box release on the reverse (which don't seem to be edited that well and at points are barely translated). On the actual disc it self, there is a gallery of images from early drafts of "Megazone 23", "Omega City 23", as well as design reference sheets. The disc was also released in special edition with a collector's box, which had space for the other two "Megazone 23" releases and included a small mouse pad. Unfortunately the box is no more than a very thin piece of cardboard folded into a box, and isn't very sturdy.
